In 2012 we converted an abandoned cistern into a waterfall & pond, on the property of the Green Toad Bed & Breakfast. After many years as the main water source for a gold mine, the cistern had been replaced with a modern well. We spent all day mucking it out, then filled part of the 8’ hole with cobblestones and lined it with Limestone boulders.
We also used the pile of dirt left over from the original excavation to raise up the surrounding area, and built stone steps up to the new pond. The old cistern was spring fed, so in the winter when the springs are running, the water is full of sediment. When the springs stop running the water clears and is recirculated with our pumping system.
